159 Facts and Snippets of Trivia

No comments :
A collection of 159 random tidbits of trivia. No particular subject set or theme. So enjoy!

I, as well as the original list compiler state that the facts have been checked to some degree (if at all) so the validity of all of them is suspect as well as completely open to change and new discovery. That being said however it still makes a great conversation piece even if just to discuss and show the debunked myth or common misconception.

182 foods for thought and groaners

No comments :
A great collection of one-liners, groaners, parables and general food for thought paragraphs. The general philosophical inclinations varies quite wildly from cosmic pondering inducing to groan worthy lines worthy of an old joke book. None the less it's a great collection.

Skimming tips

No comments :

Recall how you find a name in a telephone book? You don't read any more than necessary to find the name you seek. Notice that you go directly down a column of news. Maybe you use your finger to guide your eyes. This type of reading is usually called scanning. Skimming uses the same type of skill mechanically but a different skill mentally. In scanning, you know what you are looking for. In skimming you don't.

Since you don't know exactly what you are looking for while skimming, prepare yourself by reading the title, source, author, and picture: then you question yourself, -- who, what, when, where is this likely to be mainly about? With a questioning mind you direct your eyes down the column of print, or in a zig-zag, if the lines are quite long. Look for exact names of people, places, things, ideas, numbers, and words like therefore, whenever, until, because, and instead, to clue you to how and why.

7 tricks for speed reading

No comments :

1. Don’t repeat

This is the thing that really slows us down. Whenever you find yourself repeating the words in your mind or out loud you are significantly decreasing the speed of your reading. The goal is to read with your eyes, not with your mouth. The easiest trick around this is to repeat something else instead. Something like: “1 2 3 4 5” or “a e i o u”. This will occupy your mind with a simple activity so there’s no other way for you to read than to use only your eyes – which is the true secret of speed reading.

2. Read with your finger

The idea is simple. Just use your finger to trace under each line as you read along. The finger will determine your speed making it easy to speed up or slow down when necessary. Just remember, the finger determines the speed of your reading, not the other way around. Once you set specific speed, stick to it.
